What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth for a set period of time, typically ranging from 10 to 20 minutes. This method claims to improve oral health and provide various health benefits. While you can use different types of oil, coconut oil has become the most popular choice due to its unique properties.

Health Benefits of Oil Pulling

Starting your morning with oil pulling can be a game-changer for many reasons. First, it’s known to help reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth. When you swish the coconut oil, it binds with the bacteria and helps eliminate them, leading to a healthier oral environment.

Additionally, oil pulling may help in preventing cavities and gingivitis. Research shows that it can significantly reduce plaque growth and gum inflammation. By incorporating this practice into your morning routine, you set the tone for healthier teeth and gums.

Another perk? Oil pulling can also help improve bad breath. Swishing coconut oil can neutralize unpleasant odors and leave you with a fresher mouth. Say goodbye to minty breath fresheners with loads of chemicals; just a few minutes of oil pulling can do wonders!

Why Choose Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is often recommended for oil pulling due to its unique composition. It contains lauric acid, which has natural antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. This means when you use coconut oil, you’re not just pulling; you’re also leveraging its health benefits to combat oral diseases more effectively!

Moreover, coconut oil has a pleasant taste compared to other oils, making the experience more enjoyable. It’s fantastic at room temperature and melts easily, allowing for a comfortable swishing experience. This is particularly beneficial for beginners who might find the thought of oil pulling off-putting.

Lastly, using coconut oil aligns with the goal of promoting overall wellness. It’s organic, natural, and incredibly versatile, fitting well into a healthy lifestyle. Whether you're looking to improve your oral hygiene or are curious about natural remedies, oil pulling with coconut oil is a simple yet effective addition to your morning routine.

In conclusion, oil pulling first thing in the morning is a routine worth considering. Plus, it's easy to do while engaging in another of your holistic morning practices. (Hello, multi-tasking!!) Not only does it contribute to better dental health, but it also sets a positive tone for the rest of your day. So, grab your jar of coconut oil and start swishing—your mouth will thank you!

So how the heck do you do it?!

First, grab your coconut oil and a spoon. (Click here for the one we use! ) Take about a tablespoon and place it in your mouth. Depending on the temperature of your home, your oil may be either liquid or solid. If it is solid, don't worry - your mouth will melt it down quickly. If the solid oil is too icky of a texture for you, you can pop it in the microwave. But be careful - it gets hot fast! Only a few seconds are necessary. Swish the oil around in your mouth for at least 5 minutes. Try to work your tolerance to 20 minutes if you can for maximum results. When your time is up, spit the oil out into the trash. It is not recommended to spit into a sink or drain because the oil can solidify again and clog up your pipes. Take a toothbrush and water and gently brush your teeth and tongue to get rid of any leftover residue. After using water, brush your teeth as normal!
